Shanghai Orientation: Which Area Comes First?
Start on the Bund in Puxi to see the Huangpu River and Pudong skyline, then cross once to Lujiazui if you want the reverse view. Keep People’s Square and East Nanjing Road on the same west-bank leg.
- Puxi: the Bund, People’s Square and East Nanjing Road are west of the Huangpu.
- Pudong: Lujiazui faces the Bund across the river.
- A compact first day uses one river crossing, not repeated bank changes.

How Do You Read the City Map?
The Huangpu River is the simplest divider. The Bund is on its west bank. The towers of Lujiazui stand on the east bank in Pudong.
People’s Square sits inland from the Bund. East Nanjing Road connects the two central areas. Our river and delta guide explains the larger map.
Which Neighborhoods Fit Together?
Pair People’s Square with East Nanjing Road and the Bund. They form a sensible central walk with short transit hops when needed.
Put Yuyuan and the Old City on a separate southward leg. Place Xintiandi and Huaihai Road together for dining and shopping. Xujiahui is farther southwest, so it deserves its own stop.
How Do You Cross the River?
Choose a metro, ferry or road crossing that serves your actual next stop. A skyline view across the water does not mean the buildings share a promenade.
If you finish on the Bund, mark a Lujiazui address before leaving. The Bund visit guide helps set the west-bank part of the route.
How Long Should You Allow?
Give a first central walk a half day if you only want the square, shopping street and riverfront. Add another block for Pudong viewpoints, ticket queues or a sit-down meal.
A museum changes the pace. Do not promise the Old City, Xujiahui and both riverbanks inside one short morning. Pick one extra district based on your hotel.
What Detours Catch First-Time Visitors?
Do not treat Shanghai Hongqiao as the same place as Hongqiao Road or Hongqiao airport. Check the full station, airport or district name on every booking.
Do not place a restaurant on the opposite bank just because it looks close on a map. Save its street address and the crossing route before you book a table.
FAQ: What Should You Know?

Can I walk from People’s Square to the Bund? Yes, East Nanjing Road links the central areas. Allow more time if you shop or stop for photos.
