Chinese Zodiac
The Chinese zodiac is a repeating cycle of twelve animal signs used in cultural traditions and popular conversation. It is one part of a much broader calendar and should be approached as cultural context rather than a prediction of someone’s future.
Understand the twelve-year cycle
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig appear in order. The zodiac year does not simply change on January 1, so a birth date near the lunar new year needs the relevant calendar date checked before assigning a sign.
See the tradition in context
Animal motifs can appear in festivals, crafts, souvenirs and museum displays. Their meaning can change with place and occasion. When visiting a cultural site, use its own interpretation to understand an object instead of assuming every animal image has the same zodiac meaning.
