10-Day China Itinerary 2026: Beijing to Shanghai
Ten calendar days are enough for Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai when the route moves in one direction and each transfer has its own space. This sample assigns four days to Beijing, three to Xi’an and three to Shanghai, counting arrival and departure. It is a planning design, not a fixed package or a promise that every attraction will be open.
Days 1–4: Give Beijing two anchors and one flexible day
Use day 1 for arrival, hotel check-in and a short nearby walk. Day 2 is the imperial-center day; day 3 is the Great Wall day. Day 4 can hold a museum, park or neighborhood visit before the intercity move, depending on your departure time.
Do not turn day 1 into a major attraction day after a long flight. The trip has room for a slow start because the Wall and palace are planned on different days.
Days 5–7: Treat Xi’an as more than a museum shuttle
After the Beijing transfer, protect an easy evening. Give the Terracotta Army a dedicated outing on the next full day, with the city walls or an old-town walk on the other. Day 7 can be a lighter morning followed by the move to Shanghai.
The practical trap is choosing a hotel only for the railway station and then commuting back and forth for every city stop. Compare the station transfer once against the daily trips you will make from the hotel.
Days 8–10: Finish in Shanghai without a last-day sprint
Use day 8 for a waterfront and neighborhood orientation. Day 9 can be a museum, garden or nearby excursion, chosen after checking current opening arrangements. Keep day 10 light if it is your departure day.
A reserve afternoon in the final city is useful. It absorbs a changed train, a rainy morning or a delayed arrival without forcing you to cancel the international flight.
Choose rail or air by complete transfer time
Compare the time from hotel checkout to the next hotel check-in, not only the scheduled travel segment. Add travel to the station or airport, security, boarding, arrival transfer and luggage handling. A nominally faster flight can have a longer door-to-door day.
If the group includes children or older travelers, put one substantial attraction on a full day and keep transfer days light. For a faster trip, remove a stop before removing every rest period.
